Hyderabad, July 13, 2025 —
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice BR Gavai delivered a powerful message on Saturday during the convocation ceremony at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, stating that the Indian legal system is in dire need of reform.
Addressing law graduates at Justice City, CJI Gavai acknowledged the systemic challenges plaguing the judiciary, including long trial delays and injustices faced by undertrials. He highlighted the importance of legal talent in addressing these issues, urging the youth to be part of the solution.
“Our country and legal system are facing unique challenges. Delays in trials can sometimes go on for decades. We have witnessed cases where individuals have been acquitted after spending years in jail as undertrials,” he said.
Despite the grim observations, Justice Gavai struck a note of hope:
“Even though I conclude that our legal system is badly in need of fixing, I remain cautiously optimistic that my fellow citizens will rise to the challenges.”
Advice to Law Graduates
Encouraging students to pursue further education abroad through scholarships, the CJI advised against placing financial burdens on their families. He further urged them to seek mentors based on integrity, not influence or power.
“Choose mentors for their ethics, not their titles,” he emphasized.
